Conscious: The Edinburgh Mental Health Ball
University of Edinburgh
Conscious Edinburgh is an entirely student-led, Mental Health Charity Ball that will be held on the 16th November 2019, following on from the success of our first ball in 2018. The aim of the ball is to raise awareness of mental health problems, and to raise money for fantastic causes.
Last year Conscious Edinburgh raised a staggering £27,118.52, and we hope to better the success of that ball, not only in terms of money raised but also awareness. Despite great improvements in mental health awareness over the past few decades, there is still a long way to go.
A large reason behind why we are so passionate about these issues is because in 2016, a close friend of the founding members of Conscious, Rahoul Biswas-Hawkes, tragically took his own life during is first year at University, at the age of 19. Rahoul was extremely bright and well-liked and his death came as a shock to all he knew. The fact that Rahoul had been going through issues of depression to such an extent without the knowledge of any of this friends and family has been a source of great alarm for us all and as such we are determined to make changes so that other people going through similar issues have sufficient support and counselling networks available to them and are willing to seek such support.
