University of Birmingham Sailing Club
University of Birmingham
We welcome all levels of sailing, from complete beginners to those who look to compete at a high level. We offer RYA courses for those who have never been in a boat before at a subsidised rate. The next step for those who have completed the RYA levels is GoSail. This is for those who already know the basics and want to improve their sailing in a more casual environment. At the next level there is a development team, aiming to bridge the gap between the team racing team and course level. The competitive aspect of our club focuses predominantly on the team racing discipline of sailing, which differs from the more common ‘fleet ‘ racing in it’s intensity and speed. This year we will aim to get our teams to BUSA team racing finals, and have representatives at the BUSA fleet racing nationals and the BUSA match racing finals with the aim of scoring BUCS points in each.
We attend several events around the country, which is the perfect opportunity to put our training into practice, as well as going to some great socials! This results in a close knit community within the team, meaning that time spent sailing is always good fun.
This year we received the Development Club of the Year award for our success in renovating the social sailing side of the club, gaining sponsorship and entering Match racing for the first time and coming first in the RYA finals. We run two successful events each year, the ‘Brummy Bender’, a University team racing event and the ‘Old Joe’, our alumni event.
