UCL First-Gen Society
University College London
UCL First-Gen is one of the fastest-growing societies on campus and the only student society in London geared towards first-gen students. The society was established in 2018 with the following aims and objectives:
To provide an inclusive and supportive environment for UCL students of the first generation in their family to attend higher education
To support disadvantaged students more broadly and prospective UCL students through widening participation and outreach work
We aim to do this through regular pastoral and professional events as well as working with UCL’s Widening Participation team. In our short existence, we have organised a number of social events as well as successful workshops and networking events to support our members’ careers ambitions.
The main driver behind the establishment of the society was the fact that first-generation students are often the target of university access programmes; our society aims to ensure these students have equal opportunities, support, and necessary guidance once they arrive at university.
As a result of our mission to provide support for everyone regardless of their ability to afford membership, we do not charge a membership fee and rely on the generosity of our sponsor to put on events and provide help to as many first-gen students as possible
